Steel Plates

Plate

A steel plate is a large, flat piece of steel with a thickness greater than that of a steel sheet. The thickness of a steel plate is usually over 5 mm and can range up to tens of millimeters or even thicker. Steel plates can be cut into different sizes and shapes according to customer requirements. Standard specifications for steel plates include 6×3 meters, 12×2.5 meters, etc. Steel plates can be made from various types of steel, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, or alloy steel. Each type of steel plate possesses unique properties and is suitable for different uses.

steel sheet

Sheet

A steel sheet is a thin plate, typically ranging from 0.5 mm to 6 mm in thickness. They can be made from various types of steel, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, and aluminum-zinc alloy steel. Steel sheets can be cut into different sizes and shapes according to customer requirements. Standard widths include 1000 mm, 1250 mm, 1500 mm, while the length usually ranges from 2000 mm to 6000 mm. To enhance corrosion resistance and aesthetics, the surface of steel sheets can be treated in various ways, including galvanizing, coating, and polishing. Due to their moderate thickness, ease of processing, and high surface quality, steel sheets are widely utilized in various industries.

steel strip

Strip

The steel strip is characterized by its narrow width, long length, and thin thickness. Typically, the thickness of a steel strip ranges from 0.1 mm to 2 mm, while the width ranges from 10 mm to 600 mm, although these dimensions can be tailored to meet specific customer requirements. Steel strips can be manufactured using various materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, and aluminum-zinc alloy steel. To enhance the corrosion resistance and aesthetics of steel strips, the surface can be galvanized, coated, polished, and so on. Due to its favorable processing performance, weldability, and the availability of diverse surface treatment methods, steel strips are widely utilized across various industries.

Steel Coil

Coil

A steel coil is a form of steel that is rolled into a coil for easy transportation, storage, and subsequent processing. Steel coils come in a wide range of thicknesses, typically between 0.1 mm to 20 mm. The width of steel coils also varies, with standard widths ranging from 600 mm to 2000 mm, which can be customized according to customer requirements. Steel coils are supplied in coil form, allowing for long lengths which can reduce the need for splicing and minimize loss during processing. Steel coils are easily transportable and storable, possess good processing capabilities, and are commonly used across various industrial sectors.

How to Purchase Steel Plates

Purchasers should be aware of the final use and application environment of the plate steel being purchased in order to choose the appropriate material and treatment method. When dealing with SSM, you will need to provide the following basic information:

1. Specifications and dimensions: This includes the thickness, width, and length requirements for the steel plates.

2. Material and standards: Specify the material requirements, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and the relevant international or industry standards (e.g., ASTM, ASME, DIN).

3. Quantity: The quantity of steel plates required, typically measured in tons or square meters.

4. Surface treatment requirements: Outline the desired surface treatment method (e.g., hot-dip galvanizing, cold-dip galvanizing, hot rolling, cold rolling), along with any special surface flatness and roughness requirements.

5. Delivery requirements: Specify the delivery location, time, and any packaging requirements.

6. Quality certification: Specify any material certificate, inspection report, or third-party certification required.

7. Other special requirements: Include any specific testing, inspection, or packaging requirements.

Providing these details will enable us to fully understand your requirements and ensure the delivery of high-quality steel plates that meet your specifications and quality standards.

How are Steel Plates Produced?

The production of steel plates by SSM involves several fundamental processes and types, all designed to ensure top-quality products for our customers.

Hot rolled steel plate process:
Material preparation:
The process begins with a steel billet, which is carefully preheated to an exceptionally high temperature (approximately 1100°C to 1250°C) to maximize its plasticity.

Hot rolling:
The heated steel billet is skillfully passed through a hot rolling mill, where it undergoes continuous pressure to transform into a steel plate of the desired thickness. This high-temperature process results in excellent plasticity and mechanical properties in the steel plate.

Finishing:
To meet our clients’ exact specifications for dimensions and surface quality, hot-rolled steel plates might undergo dimensional trimming and surface treatment, ensuring superior quality.

Cold roll (optional step):
In some cases, further cold rolling is necessary to achieve precise dimensions and superior surface quality for hot-rolled steel sheets. This process takes place at room temperature, enhancing the overall quality of the steel plate.

Cold rolled steel plate process:
Material preparation:
Cold-rolled steel plates begin as cold-rolled steel coils, obtained through the cold-rolling of hot-rolled steel plates on cold-coiling machines. These coils boast exceptional surface finish and flatness.

Cold roll:
The cold-rolling mill expertly adjusts the cold-rolled steel coil to the required thickness and width at room temperature, resulting in high mechanical properties and exceptional quality, albeit with decreased plasticity.

Quenching and Annealing:
Structural adjustments and enhanced mechanical properties may be achieved through quenching or annealing cold-rolled steel plates.

Surface treatment:
For improved corrosion resistance and aesthetics, cold-rolled steel surfaces often undergo additional treatments such as coating or plating.

These meticulous processes ensure that hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel plates possess distinct mechanical properties, surface quality, and suitability for various applications. Our commitment to excellence allows our customers to select the perfect steel plate type for their specific needs.

Conclusion

The steel plates provided by SSM can be used as a product itself or as raw materials for manufacturing pipe fittings, steel pipes and flanges. We hope you can find the steel plate products you need here.
