Refer to detailed chemical resistance charts or consult with material engineers to ensure optimal performance for specific applications.
Welding Hastelloy C276
C276 is the first forged nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy that mitigates welding issues with extremely low carbon and silicon content, which provides the following advantages during welding:
- Low Carbon Content: Reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion during welding and avoids brittleness caused by carbon precipitation.
- Low Silicon Content: Decreases welding defects such as cracks and porosity in the weld joint.
Hastelloy C276 strongly recommends using pulsed GTAW technology in self-fusion welding and when using filler metal. Pulsed current provides low heat input and faster cooling rates, helping to optimize the distribution of elements in the matrix, suppress micro-segregation, and avoid the formation of TCP phases. Additionally, pulsed current refines the microstructure, enhancing the toughness and corrosion resistance of the weld joint.
When using filler metal, the selection of filler metal is very important. It is recommended to choose filler metals with a molybdenum content higher than that of the base material, such as ERNiCrMo-4 (approximately 17% Mo) and ERNiCrMo-10 (approximately 13% Mo). The high Mo content can compensate for any potential defects in the weld metal, ensuring that there are no corrosion issues when used in seawater (naval/marine applications).
