Advantages & Disadvantages of A105 Blind Flange
Avantages
- Removable and reusable, convenient for maintenance.
- More flexible than welded end caps, suitable for temporary closure.
- High strength, suitable for high-pressure service.
- Relatively simple to manufacture, cost-effective.
Inconvénients
- Heavy (especially for large diameter and high class ratings).
- Carbon steel A105 has poor toughness at low temperatures (not recommended below –20 °C).
- Requires gasket + bolts; sealing reliability depends on proper installation.
A105 Blind Flange Application
- Oil & Gas Pipelines: Temporary isolation, pressure testing.
- Chemical Pipelines: Safety isolation in corrosive or hazardous media.
- Power, Shipbuilding, Metallurgy: During maintenance or for standby pipelines.
- Storage Tanks / Pressure Vessels: Seal unused nozzles or connections.

ASTM A105 Blind Flange – Manufacturing & Quality Control Details
Carbon Steel Forgings (A105 / A105N)
- ASTM A105: Standard specification for carbon steel forgings for piping components, suitable for ambient and high-temperature service.
- ASTM A105N: Indicates the forging has been normalized (heat treated), which refines the grain structure and improves impact toughness, making it more reliable under fluctuating loads and higher pressure conditions.
- The material is carefully selected from certified steel mills to ensure consistent chemistry, mechanical properties, and traceability.
ASTM A105 Blind Flange Manufacturing Process
- Forging: Raw billets are heated and hot forged into rough flange blanks, ensuring directional grain flow for enhanced strength and resistance to stress.
- Traitement thermique:
- Normalizing (N): Heated to above the transformation temperature and air-cooled to refine grain size.
- Normalizing + Tempering: Further improves toughness, ductility, and dimensional stability.
- Usinage: CNC lathes and precision milling machines are used to achieve final dimensions, facing types (RF/FF/RTJ), and surface finish per ASME standards.
- Traitement de surface: Flanges may be shot-blasted, anti-rust oiled, or coated (black oxide, galvanization, epoxy painting) depending on customer requirements.
ASTM A105 Blind Flange Inspection & Testing Items
- Chemical Analysis: Ensures conformity to ASTM A105 composition (C, Mn, Si, S, P, etc.) using spectrometers or wet chemistry.
- Mechanical Testing:
- Tensile Test (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation).
- Impact Test (Charpy V-notch at specified temperature, when required).
- Hardness Test (Brinell, Rockwell, or Vickers depending on spec).
- Dimensional & Tolerance Checks: Measured with calibrated gauges per ASME B16.5 / B16.47.
- Surface Quality: Visual inspection for cracks, laps, pits, and machining finish; magnetic particle or dye penetrant testing may be performed on critical areas.
- Pressure Testing: Hydrostatic or pneumatic test to confirm sealing reliability, especially for high-pressure classes (900–2500).
- Nondestructive Testing (optional/customer request): Ultrasonic testing (UT) for internal flaws, Radiographic testing (RT) for weld repairs.
FAQ
Both seal the pipeline, but blind flanges are detachable and reusable, while welded end caps are permanent.
A105N means normalized A105 (heat-treated), giving finer grain structure and better toughness.
Not ideal for continuous low-temperature (< –20 °C). Materials like A350 LF2 are recommended instead.
It depends on the pressure class (Class 150 ~ 2500). For example, Class 2500 can exceed 400 bar.
By pipe size (NPS)
By pressure class (150–2500)
By service temperature (use A105 for ambient/high-temperature; switch to low-temperature steels when needed)
By facing type (RF, RTJ, FF)
