Sch 40 is generally suitable for piping systems with moderate pressure and temperature.

Sch 40 pipes are widely used in water supply and drainage systems, natural gas pipelines, industrial pipelines, boiler piping, and HVAC systems, where moderate pressure and strength are required.

The wall thickness of Sch 40 varies depending on the pipe’s outer diameter (OD); the larger the OD, the thicker the wall. Detailed wall thickness data can be found in the ASME B36.10M standard tables.

Sch 40 has a thicker wall than Sch 20, making it suitable for higher pressure, while Sch 80 has an even thicker wall, designed for high-pressure applications.
