To calculate steel pipe weight, there are typically two methods: one is to use a formula for calculation, and the other is to refer to weight tables.
Solution 1: Calculate using the formula
Step 1. Understand the Pipe Specifications
- Outer Diameter (OD): The external diameter of the pipe.
- Wall Thickness (WT): The thickness of the pipe wall.
- Inner Diameter (ID): The internal diameter of the pipe, which can be calculated using the formula:
ID=OD−2×WT
Step 2. Select the Correct Density
Choose the appropriate density based on the material of the pipe. Common densities are:
Material | Density (g/cm³) | Density (lb/in³) | Material | Density (g/cm³) | Density (lb/in³) |
Carbon Steel | 7.85 | 0.28 | Hastelloy B2 | 8.80 | 0.32 |
Stainless Steel 300 | 8.00 | 0.29 | Inconel 600 | 8.47 | 0.31 |
Stainless Steel 400 | 7.75 | 0.28 | Inconel 625 | 8.44 | 0.31 |
Nickel 200 | 8.90 | 0.32 | Inconel 718 | 8.60 | 0.31 |
Nickel 201 | 8.90 | 0.32 | Incoloy 800 | 8.08 | 0.29 |
Monel 400 | 8.80 | 0.32 | Incoloy 825 | 8.05 | 0.29 |
Monel K500 | 8.80 | 0.32 | Copper Nickel 90/10 | 8.90 | 0.32 |
Hastelloy C276 | 8.90 | 0.32 | Copper Nickel 70/30 | 8.60 | 0.31 |
Hastelloy C22 | 8.90 | 0.32 | Aluminum | 2.70 | 0.10 |
Step 3. Use the Calculation Formulas
Weight Calculation Using Outer Diameter and Wall Thickness
Weight(kg/m)=(π/4)×(OD²-(OD-2×WT)²×Density/1000
Weight(lb/ft)=(π/4)×(OD²-(OD-2×WT)²×Density*12
Example
Stainless steel : 1″ SCH 40; OD= 1.315 in /33 mm; TH=0.133 in/3.378 mm; Density =0.289 lb/in³ / 8.00 g/cm³
Weight(kg/m)=(π/4)×(33²-(33-2×3.378)²×8.00/1000= 2.51 kg/m
Weight(lb/ft)=(π/4)×(1.315²-(1.315-2×0.133)²×0.289*12= 1.71 lb/ft
These steps help in obtaining the weight of a steel pipe for inventory management, transportation, and cost estimation.
Solution 2: Check the weight table
Most pipes are produced according to standards, as their weight can be determined using weight tables.
