Understanding Flange Assembly: Components, Types, and Assembly Techniques
Flanges are generally circular metal discs with holes, which are bolted to another identical or similar flange disc to form a strong, detachable connection. The design of the flange makes it easier to install, maintain, and repair pipeline systems.
ANSI vs ASME
ASTM focuses on materials testing and performance standards.
ASME emphasizes mechanical and pressure equipment design and safety standards.
ANSI, as a standard certification and coordination body, approves and promotes these standards but does not directly create technical standards.
ASME B16.5 Forged Flanges Weight Chart
To estimate the weight of ASME B16.5 flanges (including Slip-On, Threaded, Socket Weld, Lap Joint, Blind, and Weld Neck), the material, size, and pressure class of the flange must be considered. The weight can be calculated based on the flange’s design and dimensions, such as the outer diameter (OD), thickness, and material density. To simplify the process, the weight of the flange can also be estimated by referring to a table.
Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number
The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) is a measure used to evaluate the resistance of stainless steels and other corrosion-resistant alloys to pitting corrosion. The higher the PREN value, the greater the material’s resistance to pitting, particularly in environments containing chlorides, such as marine settings or other highly corrosive chloride-rich environments.
Recycling Stainless Steel
Stainless steel recycling refers to the process of reprocessing discarded stainless steel products or scrap material for reuse in production.
Pipe Ends
“Pipe ends” refer to the two ends or openings of a pipe, which are typically processed to connect with other pipes, fittings, or components as needed.
