ASTM B619 requirements for manufacturing and treatment of nickel alloys
The standard covers two classes of pipes, which are differentiated by their manufacturing and treatment processes.
Class I:
Pipes in this class are either:
As welded and solution annealed: The pipe is welded and then heat-treated (solution annealed) to enhance its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.
Welded and sized and solution annealed: After welding, the pipe is resized (usually to ensure precise dimensions) and then solution annealed.
Class II:
Pipes in this class undergo a more rigorous process:
Welded, cold worked, and solution annealed: After welding, the pipe is cold worked (which involves deforming the pipe at room temperature to improve strength) and then solution annealed.
Condition of Supply:
All pipes must be provided in a “solution annealed and descaled condition.” This means:
Solution Annealed: The pipes are heat-treated to dissolve any precipitates and homogenize the microstructure, improving corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
Descaled: The removal of surface oxides and scales, which are common after heat treatment.
Exception: If the pipes are manufactured using an atmosphere-controlled process (which prevents oxidation during heat treatment), descaling may not be necessary.
This classification and treatment process ensures the pipes meet the required standards for mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, making them suitable for demanding applications, especially in corrosive environments.
Advantages and Disadvantages of ASTM B619 Hastelloy Pipes
Advantages: It is resistant to chloride corrosion, performs well in chloride-containing environments, performs very well in oxidizing and reducing environments, maintains good mechanical properties at high temperatures, and is suitable for high-temperature applications such as power plants and petrochemical facilities.
Disadvantages: Hastelloy pipes are more expensive than other materials (such as stainless steel or carbon steel) due to the high cost of alloying elements (nickel, molybdenum, etc.) and complex manufacturing processes. Their high strength and toughness make them more difficult to machine, form, and manufacture than conventional materials.
ASTM B619 Hastelloy pipes provide excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature performance, making them indispensable in harsh environments. However, the high cost and processing challenges require careful consideration when selecting these materials for specific applications.
