ASTM A350 LF2 Flange By Types

Welding Neck Flange

ASTM A350 LF2 Weld Neck Flange

ASTM A350 LF2 Weld Neck Flange is an essential solution for low-temperature service. It features a long tapered hub that is expertly welded to the pipe.

slip on flange

ASTM A350 LF2 Slip On Flange

The Slip-On (SO) flange offers a seamless fit over the end of the pipe, ensuring strength and leak prevention through dual inside and outside welding.

Socked Welding Flange

ASTM A350 LF2 Socket Weld Flange

The Socket Weld (SW) flange boasts a recessed area (socket) for easy pipe insertion, with fillet welding at the top providing a secure connection.

Lap Joint Flange

ASTM A350 LF2 Lap Joint Flange

The Lap Joint flange, also known as a loose flange, offers easy alignment as it slides over a butt-welded stub end, enabling swift rotation.

Threaded Flange

ASTM A350 LF2 Threaded Flange

The Threaded (TH) flange’s internal threading matches the external threading on the pipe, promoting effortless assembly without welding.

Blind Flange

ASTM A350 LF2 Blind Flange

The blind flange—a solid disc with no bore or opening—stands as a reliable solution for fully blocking off pipelines or systems.

Advantages of ASTM A350 LF2 Flanges

Economical

Despite providing excellent performance under low temperature conditions, the cost of ASTM A350 LF2 flanges is generally more economical than that of other high-performance materials.

Excellent low-temperature toughness

ASTM A350 LF2 flanges can withstand temperatures as low as -50°F (-46°C) while retaining their mechanical properties, significantly reducing the risk of brittle fracture.

Stable mechanical properties

The chemical composition and mechanical properties of the material are strictly controlled to ensure that each flange's performance is stable and consistent, with good impact and wear resistance, and to improve its durability in harsh environments.

Good welding performance

Due to their low carbon content, ASTM A350 LF2 flanges have good welding performance, enabling high-quality welded connections and reducing welding defects. They are suitable for welding with various materials and convenient for use in different piping systems.

Carbon steel for low temperature

ASTM A350 LF2 flanges are designed to maintain good mechanical properties and toughness at low temperatures, especially at temperatures as low as -50°F (-46°C) or even lower. Their use in these applications ensures the safety and reliability of the system by preventing brittle fracture at extremely low temperatures. These flanges are suitable for various industries and applications such as oil and gas, chemicals, refrigeration, and nuclear power. ASTM A350 LF2 Flanges Manufacturing Process

The production of ASTM A350 LF2 flanges involves a series of crucial processes to ensure that the final product meets the necessary standards and specifications for low-temperature service.

  • Material Preparation: Steel is cut and shaped to meet composition requirements.
  • Forging: Heated steel is forged and cooled to relieve stresses.
  • Heat Treatment: Normalizing refines grain structure and toughness. Additional processes may be used.
  • Machining: Forged blanks are machined to precise dimensions.
  • Surface Preparation: Flanges are cleaned, smoothed, and may be coated for durability.

ASTM A350 LF2 class 1 vs class 2

  • Class 1 flanges are normalized or normalized and tempered, providing superior toughness and impact resistance at very low temperatures. They are suitable for extreme low-temperature environments.
  • Class 2 flanges are tempered and are used in environments with less severe temperature requirements. They offer adequate toughness but are not as resilient as Class 1 flanges in extreme cold conditions.

Here’s the comparison between ASTM A350 LF2 Class 1 and Class 2 flanges in a tabular format:

AspectClass 1Class 2
Heat TreatmentNormalization or Normalizing + TemperingTempering (Normalization not required)
Impact Test Temperature-50°F (-45°C)0°F (-18°C)
Mechanical PropertiesHigher toughness and better low-temperature impact resistanceLower toughness compared to Class 1
ApplicationUsed in severe low-temperature environments (e.g., Arctic oil and gas, LNG facilities)Suitable for less stringent low-temperature environments
Key CharacteristicsRequired to withstand extremely low temperatures and provide high impact toughnessSuitable for moderately low temperatures with adequate toughness

What is the difference between ASTM A105 and ASTM A350 LF2?

ASTM A105 is suitable for ambient and higher temperatures, while ASTM A350 LF2 is designed for cryogenic applications. The chemical composition of A350 LF2 includes additional alloys, such as nickel, which enhances its low-temperature toughness. Impact testing is required during the inspection, which is unnecessary for A105 materials.
